Resolutions - Part 2
By Glen Knabe
Have you made your spiritual New Year’s Resolutions yet? Here are a few more suggestions from the preacher and author Leroy Brownlow.
    R--Read
    E--Encourage
    S--Shine

O--Obey: To obey has always been one of the marks of a faithful servant of God. The faith of Abraham was seen through obedience and it was credited to him as righteousness (Gen. 15:6). Samuel told Saul that to obey was better than sacrifice (1 Sam. 15:22). God tells us in Hebrews 5:9 that His Son is the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him and Jesus tells us that not everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved, but only he who does the will of God (Matt. 7:21). Surely, there is no greater advice to be given to a believer than as the song says, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” Let us resolve to obey God with all our hearts.

L--Love: One day an expert in the law of Moses asked Jesus a question. “Teacher,” he said, “which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matt. 22:37-39). Jesus is our example of these commands. His love for others was equal to it and so in love He descended from the throne and ascended to the cross. Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:11). In fact, this is the new command that Jesus gives us. “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you one another” (John 13:34-35). Let us resolve to love; love God and our neighbor.

U--United: Romans 6:4-5 tells us that through baptism, we are united with Christ, not only in death, but also in resurrection to eternal life. Being united with Christ puts us in Christ, His body, which is the church. There, we are united with one another (1 Cor. 12:13, 27; Eph. 4:25). There, Jesus prays that we may be brought to complete unity (John 17:23). Even though we are different from one another in our characteristics, behaviors, opinions, attitudes and appearances we are one in Christ and are called to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3). “How good and pleasant it is when brother lives together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1). Let us resolve to be united; in faith, in action, in love, in Christ.

Commitment                   "A Word from Ryan"

If we are Christians and say that we are following the Lord, then it is something that must be a daily thing. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). If we wear the name of Christ, we must wear it on a daily basis. We definitely can not pick and choose what day we are going to live the Christian life or not. It is a daily walk with God.  Daily walking with God includes being in the Word of God and communicating with God in prayer. Jesus said to be faithful till death (Revelation 2:10). Jesus wants us to be faithful to Him not here and there but always.  A good friend of mine made a strong point in a lesson once as he said, “If we are to make God part of our life then God can’t be just a part of our life.” He has to be all of our life.  Once we give ourselves to Christ in baptism, we are submitting to God and His will for our life and that is something we all should take serious. There is a story that is told of a chicken and a pig that were walking down the side of a highway one day. The chicken looked up and saw a billboard sign which said, “The Great American Breakfast.” Under the title was a picture of a breakfast plate with things like eggs and ham. The chicken said to the pig, “I made a contribution to that.” The pig then said to the chicken, “For you it may have been a contribution, but for me it was total commitment.”  Being committed to Jesus means to be dedicated to the Lord! Following Jesus all of our days are about saying “NO” to self and “YES” to Jesus.  That means we are controlled by the Spirit not by the flesh. I have been crucified with Christ nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me. The life that I now live in the flesh I live by the faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20). Well, what does that mean? That means that we are to submit to God and to surrender to His ways.

The Prodigal Son
fatted calf A Bible school class had been studying about the prodigal son. The teacher gave a quiz to see how well they understood the parable. She asked one youngster, “Who was sorry when the prodigal son came home?” The boy gave it a lot of thought, then said, “It was probably the fatted calf.”
