Resolutions - Part 4
By Glen Knabe

As the new year begins, let us resolve as individuals and as a congregation to:

R--Read: Read God’s Word on a regular basis
    E--Encourage: Encourage one another daily.
    S--Shine: Let your light shine.
O--Obey: To obey is better than sacrifice.
L--Love: Love one another as God has loved us.
U--United: A house divided cannot stand
T--Teach: Teach our friends, neighbors and children by our words and deeds.
I--Increase: May we increase in our wisdom, our giving, as well as in our
        numbers.
O--Observe: Let us observe the Lord’s Day with thanksgiving and praise.

N--Number: Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” This passage urges us to prioritize our lives. There are no guarantees where life is concerned. We have no certainty regarding next year, much less the next day. Are we prepared for what lies ahead? Too often we fall into the ruts of everyday life and forget for too long that life is short. Days are wasted that could have been spent with family, or brothers and sisters in Christ. Opportunities to minister to others and spread God’s word are lost. Satan has us so focused on the moment at hand that we sometimes fail to see the big picture. So let us resolve to number our days. Let us remember that each day is a precious gift from God to be used to glorify Him. Let us use those days with joy, giving thanks to Him who made them for us.

S--Serve: Jesus said in Matthew 20:28 that He did not come to earth to be served but to serve. May we resolve to follow His example. First to serve God. In Matthew chapter four when Jesus was being tempted by the devil to gain all of the kingdoms of the world and their glory if He would just bow down and worship him, He said, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” He is the only one worthy to be served. As children of God, we are called to serve Him. We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God and we serve Him and Him only. Secondly, we are to serve each other. We are to bear each other’s burdens. We are to rejoice with those that rejoice and mourn with those that mourn. Galatians 5:13-14 tells us “. . . to serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command; ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” So let us serve as Jesus Himself has served us.

JOY

Where does a person find joy? Possibly the best explanation comes from an acrostic using J.O.Y.

The J represents Jesus...
The Y stands for You...
The O signifies zero, or nothing.
Joy is found when “nothing” comes between “Jesus” and “You.”

True joy is found by having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  Joy is not found in things of the world.  Do you want to be full of joy?  Do you know the Lord?  If not, come to know the Lord and you too will have true joy.  "Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice" (Philippians 4:4).

hearts

It seems prayer still upsets some people. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate in January 1996, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard; "Heavenly Father, We come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of speech and expression. We have ridiculed the time honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free ... Amen!"

With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our Nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again be called “One Nation Under God”.

Foster Parent Training
Pleasant Valley Church of Christ plans to host a foster parent training class, the date to be set by applicants. The class is required by the state for all foster parents. Anyone interested should contact Sarah Wade at Searcy Children’s Homes at sarah@searcychildrenshomes.org, 501-268-3243 or 501-230-3420 for more information. This is a 27-30 hour course and training will be over two weekends. Singles are welcome as well as two parent homes and each parent must go through the training. The Lord calls us to take care of the widows and orphans so please prayerfully consider this opportunity

The Love of Teaching
A Sunday school teacher asked her class, “If I sold my house, my car, and had a big garage sale and gave all the money to the church, would I get into Heaven?”

“No!” shouted all the children.

“If I cleaned the church building, mowed the lawn, kept everything neat and tidy, would I get into Heaven?”

The answer again was “No!”

“Well,” she continued, “Then how can I get into Heaven?”

A five year old shouted, “You gotta be dead!”
