The Same Yesterday, Today and Forever - Part 2
By Glen Knabe

What better way to learn of the God of the New Testament than to study about Him from the Old Testament, for God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Many skeptics believe that the Old and New Testaments describe two different Gods. However, as we saw last week, and as we will see this week, God is the same. He is the Ancient of Days and does not change. From the very beginning of mankind, God has dealt with man based on these three eternal principles: grace, faith, and obedience.

Last week we looked at examples from the Patriarchal age. In this biblical era, God spoke to man through the patriarchs, or family heads. This week, let’s look at the Mosaic Age, or as some call it, the Jewish dispensation. In this age, God spoke to man through prophets, and in this age, God worked the same as He did in the first. The deliverance of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage was an act of grace. The people believed Moses and obeyed his word when given instructions about the last plague and about leaving Egypt. They were protected from the plagues and kept safe as they marched out of Egypt. They were even given articles of gold and silver and brass by the Egyptians and in this way took the plunder of Egypt with them. It was time to give the Israelites the promised land, another act of grace. This time, however, the people did not have faith and they did not obey the Lord. Therefore, they had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years, until all of those who had no faith and disobeyed passed away. When it was time again to enter the promised land, it was again based on faith and obedience. The battle of Jericho was successful because the Israelites believed and obeyed. The period of the Judges is all about faith and obedience.

When Naaman became afflicted with leprosy, God provided the cure; an act of grace. However, Naaman was not healed until, through faith and obedience, he completed what God told Him to do. He had to wash in the river Jordan seven times.

In the Old Testament, God acts by extending grace. He did this in the Patriarchal Age and He did this in the Mosaic or Jewish dispensation. What happens next is dependent upon man’s faith and obedience. As we look at the New Testament and the Christian Age next week, we will see that God is the same God and He still deals with mankind today the same as He did yesterday.

Valentine's Day                   "A Word from Ryan"

penguins

Valentine's Day February 14, 2008 is just a few days away. This is a time of year where people show love to the ones they love. I used to hate Valentine's Day back in junior high, high school and college because I never had anyone to spend it with. But now I am married to the most beautiful woman in the world and have the cutest daughter. She looks like her mother, thank the good Lord. I am very blessed and the Lord has blessed me richly. He has blessed me with the greatest gift of all and that is with the love of Jesus. For God SO loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son...(John 3:16). During this week, when we think about our loved ones on Valentine's Day; don't forget the great love of God and how He sent Jesus to die on the cross for your sins and mine. He loves you more than anything else. If you do not know the great love of God, why not give your life to Him this day in repentance and baptism (Acts 2:38). Or, if you know Him and are away from Him, why not come back to where you are loved? What a great and awesome God we have. Happy Valentine's Day and God bless!

The Caring Sisters Ministry

This ministry began about sixteen (16) years ago with the concept of Christian sisters getting to know each other on a one on one basis. We began to meet and came up with plans and ideas of things that we could do for an outreach program. The noon meals were born and it has been one of the best outreach programs. Meals are prepared in the kitchen and delivered to people who are in need. woman w/food tray They do not have to be members of Holden Avenue to receive a meal. Our whole purpose was not only to feed the body but to feed the spiritual side as well. Our ministers put together a small devotional and it is taped to the lunches. Lunches are prepared for approximately 50-75 people per week (at times it was over 100 per week that were fed). We have a wonderful group of ladies that prepare the meal each week and deliver, as well as several men (our Caring Brothers) that volunteer their services to deliver. These ladies are to be commended for 16 wonderful years of service. If anyone would be interested in cooking and participating in this ministry, please let us know. We would love to have you. We also have a Prayer Chain for people needing/requesting prayers. And we have a scholarship fund for our seniors here at Holden Avenue. What better way to let our seniors know how much we love and appreciate them by helping them to get started in college. The Caring Sisters have also had coat/clothing drives here at the building. With generous help from members of the congregation donating clean & good used clothing/coats, we were able to open our doors and give away clothing/coats to those who were in need.

Silencing of God

We are very excited to present a special presentation on Sunday evenings beginning February 17th. The Silencing of God is a DVD series that addresses our Christian heritage as a nation and encourages us to “reaffirm biblical values in public life.” The series is presented by Dave Miller, Ph.D., of Apologetics Press in Montgomery, Alabama. We will view one lesson of the five (5) part series each Sunday evening from February 17th through March 16th Each lesson will last approximately 55 minutes. Please make plans to attend and invite your friends.

Church Cats
Johnny’s mother looked out the window and noticed him “playing church” with their three kittens. He had the kittens sitting in a row, and he was preaching to them. She smiled and when about her work. A while later she heard loud meowing and hissing and ran back to the open window to see Johnny baptizing the kittens in a tub of water. kitten She called out, “Johnny, stop that! Those kittens are afraid of water!” Johnny looked at her and said . . . “They should have thought about that before they joined my church.”
