Coming Clean                      "A Word from Ryan"

Have you ever noticed how quick we are to blame others for our sins?  Adam blamed Eve, then he blamed God.  Eve blamed the Serpent. and so on, and so on ... We also make our own excuses. Have we ever attempted to excuse our actions by saying the following words?
cartoon quip
  • It was his fault ...
  • He had it coming ...
  • I couldn't help myself ...
  • I had to do something ...
  • He made me ...
  • I never would have done it, but ...
  • If they didn't like what I did, they shouldn't have ...
  • I'm not to blame for ...
  • At least I didn't ....
  • What else could I do ...
  • I had no choice ...
All of these statements are occasionally heard and all of them are attempts at shirking responsibility, and avoiding a humble confession of wrong-doing.  Next time we make a mistake, may the words that come out of our mouth simply be, "I have sinned," as was spoken by the "man after God's own heart" (1Samuel 12:13).

One Sunday Morning
One Sunday morning, the preacher noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names with small American flags mounted on either side of it. Alex had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the preacher walked up, stood beside him and quietly said, “Good Morning, Alex.” man at Viet Nam Memorial Wall “Good morning,” he replied, still focused on the plaque. “What is this?” Alex asked. The preacher answered, “Well, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear, asked, “Which service, Sunday morning or Sunday evening?”
