What Pleases the Lord
By Glen Knabe

Throughout the history of the world, civilizations have sought a higher power. They have observed the different aspects of the world and have come to the conclusion that there is a higher power to seek. This sense of looking for one greater than ourselves to worship was placed in us by God Himself. (Acts 17:26-27) One grave error occurred in man’s search to fulfill this longing inside of him and thus ensure his own happiness. Somewhere along the line man developed the concept that he had to perform certain acts or be able to contribute certain qualities in order to be pleasing to those he worshipped. This is seen in every world religion today, except Christianity. This means that I have to earn my salvation, or that my worth and importance in the god’s eyes are based on how many and what kind of good works I have done.

What a miserable way to live! For no matter what I did, I would always wonder, did I do enough? Praise God for letting us know what pleases Him and praise Him that it has nothing to do with my abilities. Psalm 147:10-11 reads, horse “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor His delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in the those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.” That’s the key to my salvation and my happiness, “His unfailing Love!” To please God is to put my hope in Him and in His love, not my own. My happiness as a man stems from my finding the one true higher power that created us all and worshipping Him and being found in a pleasing relationship with Him. That depends completely on what He has done and has absolutely nothing to do with what I have done. “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.” (I John 4:16)

Acts of Worship                   "A Word from Ryan"

sheet music Singing is an act of worship arising from our spirit's desire to praise God and edify others.  The songs give honor and glory to God.  His presence is so awesome that, like the angels in heaven, we sing to praise His glory.

Praying is another act of worship arising from our desire to express praise, petitions and penitence to God.  The focus is to praise God and to make petitions for ourselves and others.  We stand in awe that God, who numbers the hairs on our head and realizes every sparrow that falls, hears and answers our prayers.

Bible The Lord's Supper is a third act of worship arising from our spirit.  In it we commune with Christ and His church.  It is awesome to realize that we are in the presence of the loving Savior and are remembering His death on the cross.  It is a time of holy and hushed communion with our risen Lord who will someday be our Judge.

money Giving is a fourth act of worship arising from our spirit.  The Christians in Macedonia gave generously because they "first gave themselves to the Lord" (2 Corinthians 8:5).  Gratitude, humility and love flow together to find expression in the gifts we give to Him who made and sustains all things as they are.

Fifth, listening to the Word of God is an act of worship.  This language is received, not as the words of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13).  We listen in awe and humble submission for it is the Lord who speaks.  ~Jimmy Jividen
