“O, Come Let Us Adore Him”
By Glen Knabe

If someone were to ask you what Christ means to you, how would you respond? I personally find that the English language is quite inadequate when simply trying to describe Jesus, much less trying to express feelings or emotions over what He means to me. We would all say that adoring Christ is something all Christians should know how to do but that is easier said than done, isn’t it. We have enough trouble expressing our love to our mates, how much more incompetent are our efforts at articulating adoration to our Savior concerning what He means to us. “Speechless” doesn’t even cover it. How then can we adore Him? How can we teach our children to adore Him. Ahhh. Children. We can adore children; especially our own. We look at them and see a personification of the love that exists between husband and wife. Their perfection and innocence radiate from every twinkle in their eyes and every twitch of a smile. When they laugh, you would have thought the angels just broke into chorus, it sounds so pure. Your own lips can’t help but to curl up as your ears take in the joyous sound and your mind is lost in the anthem of the laughter of a child. This is the closest to heaven we can get while on earth.

We adore them because we know them. We see them every day. We study their habits and likes and dislikes and peculiarities. We know what makes them sad and we know what makes them laugh. We know what makes them tick and we know what gets their goat. We adore them because we know them and because they are heaven on earth.

Some of us have a hard time adoring Jesus because we don’t really know Him. We know about Him and we know what He has done for us but we don’t really know Him and we can’t adore someone that we do not have a relationship with. We adore them because we know them and have a relationship with them. We adore Jesus for the same reasons.

Just as spending time with someone enables you to get to know them and form a bond with them, spending time with Jesus enables us to get to know Him and form a relationship with Him. From there, the natural response to Jesus is nothing short of adoration. But we start with a name. Only on a first name basis can we open up and truly know someone. Perhaps the best place to begin in adoring Jesus is with the name. His name is “God saves.” What images comes to mind when you say “God saves.” How has He saved you? How many times? How come?

When you say the name of a child, all that that child is to you, floods your heart and mind. When you speak the name of Jesus, may it flood your very being with adoration.

Good news from heaven the angels bring,
Glad tidings to the earth they sing:
To us this day a child is given,
To crown us with the joy of heaven.
