"Spring" - Part 2
By Glen Knabe

Spring: n. A natural flow of water from the ground.

Between the ages of 12 and 18, I lived in a small community in Independence county. The terrain was hilly and throughout the area, there were small fresh water springs. One such spring surfaced a few yards from our work shop. My brother and I enlarged the opening of the spring where it surfaced and during the few years we lived there it had many uses. Being a spring, it always provided fresh water. Many times it served as a sink in which we washed our dirty hands after playing or working in the shop. On other days we used it as a drinking fountain. What fun it is for a boy to get on all fours and stick his face in cold clean water and drink. Sometimes we even used it for a live well. We did a lot of fishing in those days and blackhead and shiner minnows were hard to keep alive between outings. With a piece of wire mesh in place at one end, that spring keep minnows alive for weeks at a time. In the six years we lived there, I never remember the spring being dry.

I was always amazed at where the water came from. No matter how hot and dry it was, the spring was always wet. Regardless of the size, whether this small spring in Locust Grove or a large spring, such as Mammoth Spring (the source of the Spring River), they never stop producing clean, clear, precious water.

When talking to a Samaritan woman, Jesus said that He could give such water, living water. This literally meant flowing water, moving water, such that comes from a spring (John 4:10). A few verses later (verse 14) Jesus explains that this spring wells up to eternal life. In chapter 7 of John, Jesus cries out to the people on the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever, believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” Jesus is our spring. He offers the water of eternal life. You may go to Him and wash your sins away. You will be truly clean. Those that drink from His living water will never go thirsty again. In Him is life, eternal life and even here on this earth He offers a full life (John 10:10). The source of this Spring is divine and will never run dry.

As John 1:16 says, “From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another.” God’s grace is always full and overflowing to all who receive Him. “To him who is thirsty, I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.” (Rev. 21:6)

Mary had a little boy

Mary had a little boy --
His soul was white as snow,
He seldom came to Bible Class
‘Cause Mary wouldn't go.
He never heard the stories of Christ,
That thrill the childish mind;
While other children went to class,
little boy on trike
little boy on paper route This child was left behind.
And as he grew from babe to youth,
She saw to her dismay,
A soul that once was snow white
Became a dingy gray.
Realizing he was lost,
She tried to win him back;
But now the soul that once was white
Had turned an ugly black.
She even started back to church
And Bible Study too.
She begged the preacher, “Isn’t there
A thing that you can do?”
The preacher tried, and failed; he said
little school boy
little boy on bike “We’re just too far behind.
I tried to tell you years ago,
But you would pay no mind.”
And so, another soul is lost
That was once as white as snow,
Bible Study would have helped -
But Mary wouldn't go.
