"This Is How We Know" - Part 1
By Glen Knabe
I was privileged to attend the Harding University Lectures and hear brother G.P. Holt just a year or so before his death. His topic that morning was “By This All Men Will Know.” By “this.” What is this? Whatever it is, it is of extreme importance because it will make known to the world, to all men everywhere, that we belong to God. By “this,” I will be identified as His disciple. What is “this?”--if you love one another (John 13:35).
One cannot look into your heart and discern your love for another person. I can say that I love someone but that does not necessarily prove that I love them. What Jesus told us to do was more than tell one or two people that we are close to that we love them. Jesus did not say that we could convince others of our discipleship by a warm feeling we have inside of us. For the world to know that we belong to God we are going to have to do more than feel it, or even say it, we are going to have to show it. John tells us in 1 John 3:18 to not love with words or tongues, but with actions. He is not saying that telling people you love them and appreciate them is not important, it is and we all need to express those feelings more to each other. John is saying that love can only be truly felt and recognized for love when it is put into action.
If one from the world were to look into our congregation, or into your family, what would they see, love annunciated, or love demonstrated? Would they hear words and see deeds to back it up or would they just hear words? For God’s church (and the blessings that come from being a member of it) to have any bearing on one’s life, it must not be presented as a choice, but proven as the only choice. The only way to prove it is to demonstrate the love that God has demonstrated to us.
When we come together to worship, or when we see each other on the streets, or when we work side by side with our brothers or sisters in Christ, remember that the world is watching. They are not looking for the right answers to the right questions. They are not looking for the correct way to worship. They are looking for love.

Soaring Like Eagles "A Word from Ryan"
Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it. (Author Unknown)

The smallest good deed is better than
the greatest intention. ~Selected
An eye witness account from New York City, on a cold day in December, some years ago: A little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the young boy and said, ’My but you’re in such deep thought staring in that window!’ ’I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,’ was the boy’s reply. The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her.

Excuses never heard
Church is not a priority for me. I don’t like to go to church. My time is too valuable to spend an hour at worship. I am too lazy to get up and get ready for church. I have stayed away for so long that I am ashamed to go back. I don’t come to church because if I do I might be convicted. If I am convicted, then I would have to change. I don’t want to change because I like my life just the ways it is. Copied from the First Christian Church bulletin. |
