"All It Takes Is A Little . . ." - Part 1
By Glen Knabe
It doesn’t take much. Just a little will do. Just a pinch of salt. Just a dab will do you. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5:6 that just a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough (also in Gal. 5:9). In both cases, Paul is talking about an individual whose sin or teaching affected the entire body. It worked through everyone in the church. This is in harmony with what Jesus had to say about sin. In Matthew 16:6 Jesus said, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisee and Sadducees.” This is also recorded in Mark 8:15 and in Luke 12:1. All it takes is a little and the entire body is affected. In the book of Numbers we read how Moses sent spies into the land of Canaan to see what kind of land it was. Twelve spies were sent out and they reported that the land was indeed a very good land. However, ten of the spies had no faith. They were afraid and doubtful and said “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger that we are” (Numbers 13:31). Then they spread among the Israelites (like yeast) a bad report about the land they had explored. All it takes is a little. Because of those ten men and their lack of faith, the entire Israelite community lost heart and raised their voices and wept aloud, “If only we had died in Egypt.” Because of those ten men, the same Israelites that saw first hand what God did to the Egyptians, rejected the land God had given them.
Most counselors and psychiatrists say that it takes a minimum of five positive experiences or compliments to out-number or void out one negative experience or comment. Some say it takes as many as twenty to one. Joshua and Caleb were outnumbered five to one. The numbers were flip-flopped. Five negative to one positive. The results were devastating. So are the results of one negative comment, one damning criticism, one sin not confronted. It will spread through the whole batch of dough. For this reason, it is so important to do as God, through Moses, commanded the Israelites to do. On nine
occasions in the book of Deuteronomy Moses said, “Purge the evil from among you.” Or as Paul says in

Forrest Gump & St. Peter "A Word from Ryan"
When Forest Gump died, he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter said, "Welcome, Forest. We've heard a lot about you." He continued, "Unfortunately, it's getting pretty crowded up here and we find that we now have to give people an entrance examination before we let them in." "Okay," said Forest. "I hope it's not too hard. I've already been through a test. My momma used to say, 'Life is like a final exam. It's hard.' " "Yes, Forest, I know. But this test is only three questions. Here they are." 1) Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'?" 2) How many seconds are in a year? 3) What is God's first name? "Well, sir," said Forest, "The first one is easy. Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'? Today and Tomorrow." St. Peter looked surprised and said, "Well, that wasn't the answer I was looking for, but you have a point. I give you credit for that answer." "The next question," said Forest, "How many seconds are in a year? Twelve." "Twelve?" said St. Peter, surprised and confused. "Yes, sir. January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd …" St. Peter interrupted him. "I see what you mean. I'll have to give you credit for that one, too." "And the last question," said Forest, "What is God's first name? It's Andy." "Andy?" said St. Peter, in shock. "How did you come up with 'Andy'?" "I learned it in church. We used to sing about it." Forest broke into song, "Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am His own." St. Peter opened the gate to heaven and said, "Run, Forest, Run!"
