"All It Takes Is A Little . . ." - Part 2
By Glen Knabe
All it takes is a little yeast and it will work through the entire batch of dough. One rotten apple will spoil the whole barrel. Last week we talked about the negative results of “just a little.” Let’s now discuss the positive. Even though Jesus said, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,” He also uses yeast in a positive context in Matthew 13:33. There He says, “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough.” The principle is still the same; all it takes is a little. However, in this passage, the good can worked its way through the entire batch of dough as well as the bad. Just as one rotten apple will spread its decay to the others, so will one life lived dedicated to God spread His love and salvation to others. A Christian life is a very influential thing. Also referring to the influence that Christians can have in another’s life, Jesus compared His followers to a light on a stand. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:16). Often the life lived for God is much more effective and works through the dough more effectively than the spoken word. It is more influential to “walk the walk” than it is to “talk the talk.” This is the yeast, this is the light that Jesus is talking about, our good deeds, our life lived for God, and all it takes is a little. If you have ever been in a pitch black cave, you know just how bright one tiny light can be. This is a dark world we live in. Be that light!
The early Christians exerted a powerful influence in the pagan world of the Roman Empire. One heathen critic complained that the new religion was not being spread by proper preachers at all but “by a community of cobblers and tailors.” A Roman emperor exclaimed in despair, “We Romans help nobody but ourselves. The Jews will help other Jews. But these Christians will help everybody, including Romans” (Eldred Echols: Discovering the Pearl of Great Price). In our day to day activities and encounters with the world, are we being the yeast of the Pharisees, or the yeast of the kingdom? Either way, all it takes is a little. | |

Just for fun
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block 10 times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.” When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note. “I’ve circled this block for 10 years. If I don’t give you a ticket I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.”
