"I Just Drew My Daddy Instead"
By Glen Knabe
Over the past several years I have collected a number of different bulletins from various congregations throughout the surrounding states because of the wisdom that they contain. I want to share one of those articles with you as we gather this morning for Father’s Day. It comes from a Sunday morning preschool class teacher. He had asked his class of children to draw a picture of God. He was preparing a sermon on God and wanted to use the pictures to illustrate his lesson. Towards the end of the class, the man made his way around the class to see how the pictures were turning out. The children were very excited about showing him their work. There were pictures of clouds, rainbows, and men with big hands. All of these pictures were representations of how these children perceived God. Finally, the man approached his own daughter. Her picture was very different from those of the other children. Her picture showed a man with a suit and tie on. Before the father had a chance to say anything about her work, she said, “I don’t know what God looks like, so I just drew my daddy instead.”
It has been said that “A child is not likely to find a father in God, unless he finds something of God in his father.” What an awesome responsibility we fathers have to our little ones. In His book The Effective Father, Gordon MacDonald writes about a man by the name of Boswell, the famous biographer of Samuel Johnson. Boswell often referred to a special day in his childhood when his father took him fishing. The day was fixed in his adult mind, and he often reflected upon many of the things his father had taught him in the course of their fishing experience together. After having heard of that particular excursion so often, it occurred to someone much later to check the journal that Boswell’s father kept and determine what had been said about the fishing trip from the parental perspective. Turning to that date, the reader found only one sentence entered; “Gone fishing today with my son; a day wasted.” No day a father spends with his child is ever wasted; it is a deposit into an eternal account. | |

Lord, Make Me A Potato
The story is told of a couple living in a foreign country who lost a six-month-old baby. A native came by one day to comfort them and left this proverb for them to think on. “A tragedy like this is similar to being plunged into boiling water,” he explained.
