"Lack of Knowledge Inhibits Growth"
By Glen Knabe
In Mark chapter eleven, the chief priests and the teachers of the law took offense at something Jesus had said. Verse 18 says that they began looking for a way to kill Him, “for they feared Him.” Last week we talked about fear being a lack of knowledge. This week I would like us to see that this lack of knowledge keeps us from growing spiritually.
The chief priests and the teachers of the law had a very comfortable life. Even though the Romans were in control politically, the Jews were allowed to carry out their own laws and customs and traditions as in the past. The leaders were very secure in their positions. They were well respected. People did what they said. They were secure financially. As a matter of fact, they liked their present situation and circumstances so well that when Jesus came teaching a better way, they disagreed. They thought things were going fine. They had everything going for them. When Jesus came along, He threatened their contentment. They feared Him because the whole crowd “was amazed at His teaching” (Mk 11:18). He threatened their way of life because He went against what they did and taught. They knew the law. They knew what was right and proper. Did any of the Pharisees believe in Him? No. But the people who knew nothing of the law hung on every word He said (John 7:48-49). According to all they knew, Jesus threatened their place and their nation (John 11:48). He threatened their comfort. Because of their lack of knowledge and understanding they remained in their position. When it was all said and done, they won out and got rid of Jesus. He whom they were afraid of. He whom they did not have complete knowledge of. As a result, they failed to grow. They continued doing things their way, lost in sin and blindness. They had a report circulated that Jesus’ disciples came and stole the body while the guards were asleep (Matt 28:11-15). Because of their fear, their lack of knowledge and understanding, a nation is still looking for the Messiah, not knowing that He has already come and made a way for them to leave sin and enter eternal life.
Our lives function in much the same way. Many times we get into a comfortable mode of, “I like it just the way it is. This is perfect.” At that moment, growth stops. Anything that challenges our comfortableness is seen as threatening, intrusive, and unwelcome. Because of this we unfortunately say no to many things that will lead us closer to God in our spiritual growth. A sustained level of activity does not equal growth. It is an ever increasing level of activity that creates growth. God does not call us to be what we are comfortable with, but what He sees we can be. (Judges 6:11-16).

Sacrifice "A Word from Ryan"
This past week I took 5 of our youth to Harding University's Uplift. The theme of the week was "Just Leave It." As Children of God, if we are going to be more and more like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; we must let go of sin. We must sacrifice any idols in our life and we must die each day to sin. All of us know that an idol is anything that gets in the way between us and God. Idols can be TV, internet, cell phones, golf, work, friends, bad sinful practices, etc. If it gets in the way of our relationship with the Lord, we need to leave it at the altar. Once we sacrifice and leave it at the altar, then we need to alter our lives. We alter our lives daily to be more and more like Jesus Christ. Paul commands us to be Living Sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2). If there is anything that is keeping you from being all that you can be for the Lord, then it is time to sacrifice it to better your walk with God.

Business Card
A new preacher was visiting in the homes of church members. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer come to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote “Revelation 3:20” on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, “Genesis 3:10.” Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelations 3:20 begins “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”Genesis 3:10 reads, “I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.” |
