"The Cost of Freedom"
By Glen Knabe

On April 19, 1775, British troops under the command of General Thomas Gage set out for Concord, Massachusetts to destroy colonial stores of gunpowder and weapons. On their way they met a force of minutemen in Lexington. Who released the first shot nobody knows, but with this exchange of gunfire (“The Shot Heard Round the World”) the American Revolution began.

On July 4th, 1776, 232 years ago, America declared it’s independence from the rule of the British Empire. The victory, however, did not come until General Cornwallis surrendered to a combined French/American army at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. Two years of light skirmishes followed, but the outcome of the war had already been decided. On September 3, 1783, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States of America.

Eight years of fighting had left its toll. The land had been devastated. Financially, a majority of the people of the new nation experienced poverty as prices rose to accommodate the war’s effect on the economy. Thousands lost their lives in the war effort, leaving families to fend for themselves without a husband or a father to provide for and look out for them. The effects of the war lingered for many years as the people set about to rebuild and establish law, order, and a system of government.

The cost of freedom is high. Were it not for men willing to fight for it, willing to sacrifice for it, willing to die for it, freedom would not come. No great victory prevails unless the desire to accomplish equals the dream.

As we gather this Lord’s day, with the 232nd birthday of our nation still in our thoughts, may we take time to remember the great cost of our freedom. May we pause to remember in prayer those that are fighting for its continuation even as we pray. And, above all else, may we praise and worship our Father; Who saw fit to bless this nation with freedom; Who saw fit to establish this nation so His name could be worshipped and praised and taught without persecution and judgment; and Who was willing to sacrifice all that He had to pay the cost so that we might enjoy freedom from sin. May God bless America, but more than that, may America bless God.

  MONKEYS                  "A Word from Ryan"
Three monkeys sat in a coconut tree discussing things which are said to be;

Said one to the others, "Now listen you two, there's a certain rumor going 'round which could not possibly be true!

That man descended from our noble race! Why--the very idea is a disgrace;

You've never known a mother monk to leave her babies with others to bunk,

Nor pass them around from one to another, till they scarcely know who is their mother!

Another thing you will never see is a monk build a fence around a coconut tree;

Why if I built a fence 'round a coconut tree, starvation might tempt you to steal from me!

And another thing a monk won't do! Is go out at night and get in a stew!!

Or use a gun, a club or a knife to take some other monkey's life!

... No ... Man's been descending to our disgust, but, brothers he did not descend from us !"

Psalm 139:14 - I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

You Can’t Fool God
You can fool the hapless public.
You can be a subtle fraud.
You can hide your little meanness,
But you can’t ever fool God.
You can advertise your virtues.
You can self-achievement laud.
You can load yourself with riches,
But you can’t ever fool God.
