"The Promise Ring"
By Glen Knabe

“Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” 2 Corinthians 5:5

“Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose . . .” -- What is the purpose for which God made us? Ecclesiastes 12:13 says that it to fear God and keep His commands.

Psalm 19 implies that it is to proclaim the perfect nature of God and praise Him. Ephesians 2:10 says that we are created to do good works. According to 2 Corinthians 5:1-5, however, Paul gives us another purpose, not an earthly purpose to be carried out while in the flesh, but a spiritual purpose that each of us should long for. What is that purpose? To be with God and to live with Him in heaven for all eternity. God only prepared two places to spend eternity. One was for the devil and his angels (Matt 25:41) and one was for you and me. God did not prepare hell for us, he prepared heaven for us and His purpose for our lives is for us to be there.

“. . . and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” -- When a man and a woman get married, rings are exchanged as a token of the love that exists between the two of them. It says, by its physical presence, all that the vows said when they were spoken. It is a promise of commitment, love, and devotion. Each time the ring is seen, it is a reminder of the promises made. Whether it is an engagement/promise ring or the actual wedding ring, it is a reminder of solemn promise to be with one person for life. God keeps His promises and to make sure that we know He will follow through with the promises He made (promises of eternal life, forgiveness, mercy and grace) He gave us a ring, an engagement ring, a promise ring, which is the Holy Spirit. And each time we pray, the Spirit speaks to God on our behalf. Each time we are in doubt, in stress, in weakness, or in anxiety, the Spirit is there to reassure us, comfort us, strengthen us, and give us peace. Each time you see the work of the Spirit, you can be reminded of what is to come.

Today, may we praise our God, our Father, for promises kept.

Movie Afternoon

Victorian ladies Tuesday Afternoon at the Movies will feature “The Inheritance” from a novel by Louisa May Alcott. As a paid companion to the Hamilton’s daughter, Edith struggles with her place in society when she is attracted to a man out of her social status. It’s a great movie for ALL ages. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42

Bring a friend
This will teach us that it is important for that friend to feel comfortable, welcomed and cared about.
Find visitors first
Most of us enter with only a couple of things in mind: finding our pew and finding our friends. How many of us start looking for visitors as we enter??
Don’t let them escape
People can be shy, so we may have to make extraordinary efforts to welcome them.
Use your hospitality
God teaches us that sharing our homes, our food, our friendship, is a good way to do His work. (Rom.12:13)

Are we a visitor friendly church?? If not, let’s become one!

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his grandmother’s house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away. ‘Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer.’ said his mother. lady serving food ‘I don’t need to,’ the boy replied. ‘Of course, you do,’ his mother insisted. ‘We always say a prayer before eating at our house.’ ‘That’s at our house,’ Johnny explained, ‘But this is Grandma’s house and Grandma knows how to cook!’
