"I Prayed For This Child"
By Glen Knabe After the birth of her first born son, Hannah named her child Samuel, "because I asked the Lord for Him" (1 Samuel 1:20). Samuel means "heard of God." A few verses later she says, "I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him." (verse 27). Hannah knew that her child was a gift from God. She knew that child came from Him and belonged to Him and that she was a steward of God’s precious gift. That’s why she said in verse 28, "So now I give him to the Lord." What greater gift could we give our children than to give them to the Lord? Really, what other choice is there? Should we give them to the world? Sadly, many parents do, but the Bible tells us to "train a child in the way he should go" (Proverbs 22:6). The Bible tells us to "bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). The Bible says to "Impress them (the commands of God) on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up" (Deuteronomy 6:7). How do we do that? How do we give our children to the Lord? In the thirteenth chapter of Judges we meet the wife of Monoah. She was sterile and could not have any children but an angel of the Lord came to her and told her that she was going to give birth to a son that would begin the deliverance of Israelites from the Philistines. When Monoah heard about this, the first thing he did was realize that he had no idea how to raise the child and so he prayed to and said, "O Lord, I beg you, let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born" (Judges 13:8). This next Sunday, a special time of prayer is being planned for our parents and their small children. Not that the children to be "saved" or "anointed" as many religious organizations do, but that our children and parents will have the benefit of a praying congregation behind them. Our children are one of the greatest assets a congregation can have and to keep them on track as they grow and mature, we want to give them over to God. In Matthew 19:13, the children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and pray for them. When the disciples sent them away, Jesus said, "Let the little children come me . . . for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Right now, our children are closer to God than we are. However, that stage in a person’s life does not last long. The more knowledge a child gains of the world the less intimate he/she becomes with God. So, we give them over to the Lord. The sooner we do, and the more we pray over them and for them and their parents, the less likely they will be influenced by the world.

From the Heart "A Word from Ryan"
A desert wanderer found a crystal spring of unsurpassed freshness and decided to bring some to his king. Barely satisfying his own thirst, he filled a leather bottle and carried it many days beneath the desert sun to reach the palace. By that time the water had become stale due to the old container in which it was stored. But the king tasted it with expressions of gratitude and delight, and sent away the loyal heart filled with gladness. After he left, others sampled it and expressed their surprise at how bad it was. "Ah!" said he, "It was not the water I tasted, but the love that prompted the offering." What we bring to God is marked by multiplied imperfections, but He looks beyond that to our motives. We may think our singing voice is "stale and rank," but God listens with delight. Our prayers may not be filled with eloquence but God wants to hear what is on our hearts. Could our worship be better sounding, better looking? Perhaps! Yet God is primarily looking for the love that prompted the offering.
