"Bread From Heaven"
By Glen Knabe

The Israelites had left Egypt taking with them gold and silver and almost everything the Egyptians had left worth taking. They crossed over the Red Sea on dry ground and watched as Pharaoh and his army sank to the bottom. God led them into the desert, however, there was no water. God gave them water. As a shepherd provides for his sheep, so God provides for His people. I say "provides" because He is continually in the process of providing. God’s work of providing is ongoing. From generation to generation, God provides for His sheep. When the Israelites were thirsty, He gave them water to drink. When the Israelites were hungry, He gave them quail to eat. To sustain them from day to day, He gave them bread from heaven.

It was called manna. It appeared every morning as the dew evaporated. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey (Ex. 16:31). God’s provision of manna was such a significant event that He commanded Moses to take an omer (about 2 quarts) of manna and keep it for the generations to come so that they could see the bread that came from heaven to feed the Israelites when they were brought out of Egypt (Ex. 16:32). The purpose of manna was to feed the Israelites. It was to sustain them, keep them alive, while traveling through the desert. Exodus 16:35 says that the Israelites ate manna for forty years. God provided for them until He brought them into the promised land.

In John 6:32-35, Jesus declares, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world . . . I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." God has sent down to us, His sheep, His children, Bread from Heaven, to sustain us and to give us life. He has given us bread that is sweet. It comes to us every day through His Word if we only pick it up and use its nourishment. How long will it be around? The Lord, our Shepherd, will provide for us until He brings us home to the promised land. Until then, feast on the Bread of Heaven for He sustains us and gives us life until that day.

That You May Believe                  "A Word from Ryan"
Today begins the Harding University Bible Lectureship.  I will be in Searcy until Wednesday attending the lectureship program.  The lesson today is on the Signs of Jesus. Jesus performed many sings.  Signs are important words in the book of John.  These words are used for the mighty works or miracles that Jesus did.  A sign is much more than a miracle; it is a miracle that points people to the source of that miracle, God at work in His Son, Jesus.  Here are the signs in the Gospel of John.  Jesus turned water into wine (John 2).  Jesus healed a nobleman's son (John 4).  Jesus healed a lame man (John 5).  Jesus fed 5,000 (John 6).  Jesus walked on the sea (John 6).  Jesus restored sight to a blind man (John 9).  Jesus raised dead Lazarus (John 11).  All seven of these are preparation for the last and greatest sign and that is the resurrection of Jesus from the grave.  Do you know Him?  Do you have life in His name?  Why not give your life to Jesus TODAY?  Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:30-31).
Have a great day in the Lord!
Ryan

Don’t Be Late

A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, "Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late! Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late!" While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray, "Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late ... But please don’t shove me either!"

Affection

For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? ... Therefore you shall be perfect.
Matthew 5:46,48

Be patient in your love. Don’t insist on returning
a harsh word that has been spoken. Don’t always
try to make the last parting shot in an argument.
Love those in your family even when they are
not acting in love.
